Transphobic Tampon Ad

2012-1-3_libra_ad

“A tampon maker has been branded 'outrageously transphobic' over its new advert.

“Critics say the television spot for Libra [brand tampons] implies transgender people 'are not real women because they do not menstruate,’” according to today’s online edition of the Daily Mail, which you can read here.

  1. Well, I think that there's something to be said that they can comfortably share a bathroom without any hysterics.

  2. I viewed the ad and took no offense. I realize that some folks may be more sensitive about a lot of things than I am but I thought that the ad was in fair to good humor.
On the other hand some of the comments showed a lack of knowledge, understanding and tolerance. There was confusion in referring to the 'taller' blond as a drag queen or as a post-op.

  3. The person on the left is a drag queen, therefore by definition a man in drag. End of story.

  4. Oh, we miss out on SO much!

  5. I think the blonde wishes she could look as good as the "queen." I'd LOVE to look that good!

  6. I took it as a friendly competition. The cisgender woman had the "ace" up her sleeve. I didn't think it was transphobic.

  7. The tall blond looks great.. the short blond is cute...sometimes the ability to laugh at the human condition - however we define ourselves - is so much better than the alternative. Time to lighten up people ;)

  8. The cicsgender was just doing what came natural. I think its a great commercial. One thing, when we as a whole lose our sense of humor we lose a lot. I believe things are starting to go our way. A true test of humor is the amount of malice involved, and I saw none. Both girls were cute. I agree with Brandy, lighten up.

I really took no offense. As popular media featuring TG people goes, this one was humorous and fairly tasteful, showing the two women interacting like normal people. My main thought was that I want the TG gal's gorgeous gold nails! - Diane

  10. Totally Honest Ad Campaign! (I know this might sound hypocritical of me from the woman-less pageant post). It was cool/cute/funny and in a good though catty light. Heck, if we can't laugh at ourselves ??? I mean, who among us hasn't been trumped in the ladies room by a cute sassy short blonde borngirl?

  12. My only though is the tall blond was a little overdone in the makeup.

  13. This ad is retarded to begin with. It could have been two girls. Are they implying that women are menstruating all month long?

  14. I loved the ad, We definitely all take ourselves way too seriously too much of the time. As a person who crossdresses, I certainly know my limitations. This just makes them hysterical. It's nice to be acknowledged (legitimized) once in awhile and this commercial does just that for crossdressers.

  15. I'm going to cast my lot with brina, it IS nice to be acknowledged as a simple Cross Dresser once in a while. What people think does matter.
