Girls Who Wear Glasses

Last time I went to an optometrist was over five years ago. Lately, I noticed my vision has gotten worse, so it was time to go see an optometrist again. Problem is that my old optometrist is no longer covered by my insurance, so it was time for a change.

My sister has been getting her eyeglasses online and she is very happy with that arrangement, not to mention that buying eyeglasses online is substantially cheaper than buying from an optometrist.

I decided to try that option myself, so I made an appointment with the local Costco Vision Center to get my eyes checked and obtain a new prescription for $60.

With the new prescription in hand, I visited the online eyeglass purveyor that my sister uses (Zenni). I set up a new account and entered my prescription on their website. Zenni (like other online spectacle sellers) offers the option to upload your photo to their website so that you can try on eyeglasses virtually. So I uploaded my visage and shopped for new eyeglasses.

There were a lot of frames to choose from and I found a nice gender-neutral pair for $52. That is about 12% of what I paid the last time I purchased eyeglasses from my optometrist! At that price, I decided to buy a second girlier pair to wear when I am en femme.

I uploaded my female visage to the Zenni website and shopped for my girly glasses. You can see the pair I selected in the image above. I should have my new eyeglasses in 7 to 10 days and look forward to wearing them out among the civilians real soon now.

  1. My most recent pair of glasses are definitely femme. When I bought them (my SO's suggestion), the woman at the optometrist said "are you sure? They're not a very masculine frame." I said "did you notice? I don't have a very masculine frame."

  3. Stana, Thanks, we should all try this! The frames are just too cute. Now the question is … will boys make passes?

  5. Stana, what a timely topic! Just recently I got myself some new glasses. For decades I had some thin wire frame glasses that kinda of disappeared on my guy face.

I decided to get some new frames. I decided I was going to "go for it" WAY OUT of my comfort zone and get some "ladies frames." I went to the ladies frames section and picked out a pair of "slight cats-eyes" frames that had a lavender color. I put them on and LOVED them. I was dressed drab. I showed them to my wife and she loved them on me as well. I got them.

When it came time to pick them up with my updated lenses and the sales associate opened the case she did a double take wondering if she had the wrong glasses, and I assured her no, those are MY glasses. I put on my lavender frames (again drab) and they looked great. I smiled. I went for it. So now I have ladies glasses! I love them and they are very affirming!

    1. My last pair of glasses were women's, but they were more gender-neutral than girly. My new pair are decidedly girly!

  6. You already have a large number of excellent photos of yourself. (We've seen them on this site.) So if you were tempted to try modelling, all the material for your portfolio is already here. Also, you are a great advert for senior non-op trans-women.

  8. Since having cataract surgery I have not needed glasses full time (having worn them every day of my life since I was 6) and I miss them. Having those feminine frames to hide behind really helped. Without them I feel like I need to spend extra time on my make up (specifically eyes and brows) to solidify Julie's appearance.

  9. The same with me about cataract surgery. But I still require reading glasses, so I go to places like The Dollar Tree and get decidedly women's framed glasses for $! (now $1.25 -- still a bargain). I did find a set of four polka dot reading glasses for somewhere around $10 on Amazon. I love to wear the white-on-black glasses when I wear my matching mask!

  10. A couple years ago, I got a second pair of glasses so I'd have a pair for Heather and one for everywhere else.

This July, I got a very feminine style as my only pair of glasses. They have a very bold blue metal frame with a chrome swirl on the arms. The ear pieces are marbled and glittery. In the sunlight, they're really nice looking on my face.

It made me nervous when I first chose my frames. I wasn't sure of how I would be perceived, The past week has proven that none of my fear had any reality behind it. Every day at the office for the last week, I've worn either a dress or a skirt. My coworkers have been amazingly supportive.

I want to shout this from the highest mountaintop, "If you're wanting to do something, do it."

Our eye doctor is a third-generation optometrist. The Grandfather had retired before we started going to the practice and the Dad still is working, just not full time. We've been going to them for 28 years.

I've been buying glasses from Zenni for over 10 years. Great quality, great pricing and lots to choose from. Highly recommended!
