All Boys Will Wear Dresses

Following up with my recent “All Men Will Wear Dresses” posts (here and here), I learned about Primary, an online children’s clothing store that sells dresses for girls and boys!

I assume there must be a demand for boys’ dresses, otherwise, why would Primary bother. Admittedly, this is not a big investment by Primary because they offer the very same dresses to girls. Primary may be just testing the waters, but if their test pans out and there is a demand for more boy’s dresses, the future of fashion may be interesting.

When dress-wearing boys grow up, they will want to continue wearing dresses as adults. And I can imagine future clothing stores not divided by sex (women's and men’s departments), but by age (children’s and adult’s). I hope I live long enough to see it!

  1. This potential trend has me wondering what male dress styles would be popular. As a "femulator," I lean towards very feminine styles, and I can't help but think that male oriented dresses, might be more utilitarian, definitely, a style that doesn't much blow my dress up. So, I'm thinking male styled dresses aren't going to be my thing.

  2. I think "kids" dresses works ~ there's not really a body shape difference. But men and women's dresses might be very different, if the guy just likes the dress and not the, um, infrastructure.

  3. Up until the early 1920's, it was very common for boys to wear dresses until they were "breeched" and given their first pair of pants. The ages varied, but as old as 8 wasn't uncommon. They are practical, especially in such a simple form, so I wonder if the practicality is starting to wear past the overly macho concerns that arose in the 20th century.

  4. I'd love to see the "trend" of boys in dresses get a foothold. No doubt, as Sally says, they won't be very stylish. But I see it as the proverbial "foot in the door". Once in dresses, we boys will want more colors, and then combinations of colors. Next we;ll see that girls' dresses fit the body better and we'll want our dresses to do the same thing. Seriously, everyone, not just boys, dislikes hiding under a sack.

If and when dresses gain that foothold people won't take much notice of "men in dresses" and we can femme ourselves without so many social no-nos. Perhaps people will say things like, "He looks good in that pretty dress", rather than be judgmental. Just seeing so many Drag Queens these days has lessened the negatives about our dressing, so imagine how it will be when we've already been wearing dresses in our youth. It would be a giant step toward acceptance.

    1. I wore a petticoat and knee length skirt to school when I was 8 years old. I made it thru 2 classes before they noticed I was a boy. Finally was sent home with a note for mom. So Mom said If I was going to continue wearing dresses that I would be home schooled. People just dont under stand the need we have to wear girls clothes.

  8. I want to be in dresses! It is the "right" thing to do! Then, I want to find a man who will want me, love me, make me his wife forever! Oh! What a wonderful thing that could be! I would make him the happiest, most satisfied man in the world! Yeth, I would!

  14. Why does society need to be so gender specific about clothing? As a boy growing up part of me longed to wear girls clothes and that feeling has not changed over the years.
