A Step in the Right Direction

Genderless Heels

Looking for a pair of stilettos in a men’s size 12? French shoe designer Francesco Russo has got you covered. The Italian shoe designer has launched a capsule collection called ‘A-Gender’ which, as the name suggests, offers genderless heels, loafers, and boots that go from a women’s size 5 to a men’s size 12, or an IT35–IT45. Aside from being inclusive, the shoes are beautiful — especially the heels with a d’Orsay opening.

A release for the collection made the case that this is not a mere publicity stunt. It read, “Provocation is not even an option. The project stems from the awareness of the world we live in as humans.” The designer elaborated for Vogue, “It’s not a polemic, it’s not political. It’s simply how society is moving forward. I think it’s in our duty as people who produce product to respond to the world.”

For the campaign, Russo cast transgender, non-binary model Oslo Grace. The collection is now available in stores for a limited run, but hopefully there will be more extended shoe-sizes to come from the label.

    1. Practice. Practice. Practice. Also find a support group or "transfromation studio" in your area and find feedback for your efforts.

  2. I think Grace might be female-born. From an interview they did, mentioned that they identified as male in third grade. But she looks very masc in her teen photos online. She reminds me a lot of Lesley Anne Down.

  3. I'll have to suffer through wearing my 2 1/2 year old sandals, twenty year old stilettos or year old pumps. Financially, my shoe budget is thrift store and not department store. I do think this is an idea who's time has come. If only real stores understood the need for broader range of sizes and widths. I wear a 10.5 wide men's shoe. I went to so many shoe stores seeking something to wear to work. I actually wrote a letter of complaint to Famous Footwear for their lack of wide shoes for men (and women). They were nice enough to reply and offered a 20% discount for online purchase. I just want to try on the shoe before I buy it. My pumps are a bit snug, I would have know this if I were able to try before I bought...

My daughter wears a women's 11 wide. She is nearly impossible find a shoe which fits in any store.

I think we both would welcome a stylish shoe which fits us.

  4. High heels are subconsciously and inextricably linked to the feminine image. The heels amplify the various 'symbols of (sexual) availability' as noted by Dr. John Money in various publications. The heels extend the buttocks and the projection of breasts, enhance the swing of the hips and enhance the curve of the calves of the legs. These visual, subconscious cues signal to the male that the female has approached sexual maturity and is therefore approachable, for the purposes of mating.
I would be curious to hear female reactions to men in high heels, even such heels as 'cowboy boots'. OTOH I do still have two -still new in box-- pair of 'mens high heel, platform 'disco shoes' from the early 1980's. I have tried to integrate these shoes in my female wardrobe, so far, the result is really not all that interesting. Velma
