The First 100 Days Resistance Agenda

By Robert Reich

Trump’s First 100 Day agenda includes repealing environmental regulations, Obamacare, and the Dodd-Frank Act, giving the rich and big corporations a huge tax cut, and putting in place a cabinet that doesn’t believe in the Voting Rights Act or public schools or Medicare or the Fair Housing Act.

Our 100 days of resistance begins a sustained and powerful opposition. Here’s what you can do (it will take about an hour of your time each day):

1. Get your senators and representatives to pledge to oppose Trump’s agenda. Reject his nominees, prolong the process of approving them, draw out hearings on legislation. Call your senator and your representative and don’t stop calling.

2. March and demonstrate. The Women’s March on Washington will be the day after the Inauguration. There should be “sister” marches around the country. And then monthly marches against hate. Keep the momentum alive and keep the message going.

3. Make your city and state sanctuaries that won’t cooperate with federal immigration authorities in deporting undocumented immigrants, especially people who have been here since they were very young.

4. Boycott all Trump products, real estate, hotels, resorts, everything. And then boycott all stores (like Nordstrom) that carry merchandise from Trump family brands.

5. Write letters to the editor of your newspaper and op-eds, with a steady flow of arguments about the fallacies and dangers of Trump’s First 100 Day policies and initiatives.

6. Contribute to social media with up-to-date daily bulletins on what Trump is up to, and actions in your region in opposition.

7. Contribute to the most effective opposition groups. The American Civil Liberties Union, Common Cause, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Economic Policy Institute, Inequality Media, MoveOn, and others.

8. Make the resistance visible with bumper stickers, lapel pins, wrist bands.

9. Push progressive causes at your state and local level – environmental reform, progressive taxes, a higher minimum wage, ending gerrymandering, stopping mass incarceration. Make your state a model of what the federal government should do.

10. Start a move in your state to abolish the electoral college by committing your state’s electors to vote for the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote.

11. Reach out to independents and even Trump supporters who agree with this agenda, and get them involved.

12. Your idea goes here. Meet with family and friends this weekend, and decide what you’ll contribute.

The First 100 Days Resistance Agenda. An hour a day. Send a powerful message. We aren’t going away.

  1. First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

    1. Martin Niemoller's quote is always powerful. I'm afraid there has been a grabbing of power by some unsavoury people, both in the USA and in the UK. In our case they have become part of the Brexit movement - although that is also supported by many genuine and nice people. It is being echoed in Europe and I'm afraid that it has certain things in common with the Europe of the 1930s. The future for the LGBT community may be uncertain as a result - see Niemoller's quote. It's the immigrants they are coming for at the moment. Let's hope I'm wrong.

    2. I don't understand how people keep calling Trump an anti-Semite when his daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared are very observant Orthodox Jews who he's very close with and heavily relies on.

This sort of cognitive dissonance is quite jarring.

    3. Practicing Judaism does not make one semetic. The Palestinians are semetic and I question whether the Europeans who overran Palestine in the 1940s are. There is no doubt they were persecuted in Europe because of their religion but are they semetic? Only DNA testing could determine that.

  2. I would recommend evaluating each proposal on its own merit, having heard each side of the story.

I'll confess that, as a libertarian-leaning lady, I was not a fan of a lot of what President Obama proposed, but his pardon of nonviolent drug offenders is a great practice.

    Sincerely,

    K

  3. Sorry, I didn't realize this was a political blog. I think came to the wrong place...

Since it apparently IS a political blog, I'll go ahead and take the bait. I have a copy of his 100 day plan here in front of me. Which specific parts do you not agree with? Is it the plan to clean up corruption and special interest in Washington? Is it the plan to protect American jobs? Perhaps you don't like that he plans to repeal nearly all of Obama's unconstitutional executive orders or that he believes education should be governed by the State and not by the Federal Government.

Oh, wait... I've got it. You like paying taxes!!! that must be it.

I admit that I am a conservative trans woman. I realize that makes me unique, but I have my reasons:

Right above my desire to be a woman is my desire to pay less taxes and to have the government stay out of my affairs. I don't believe for a minute that the government should fund my transition, or help me raise my children, or do any of the myriad things they have gotten involved with in recent years.

As a young college student I learned what it meant to be poor. There were some lean years but I didn't expect the government to pay for my education. Now that I'm doing well, I have made a commitment to support the poor by giving 10% of my income to charity. (As I was taught by nearly every book I've ever read on personal finance.)

I live in a rural area where people carry guns and I like to shoot guns. I pray I'll never need to use them defensively, but I'm prepared if I ever do.

I like to keep my body healthy and stay in shape. I don't often go to the doctor, but when I do, I keep an emergency fund and pay for it! In fact just this week I went to the doctor (for the first time in two years...) only to be told that there is a remedy for what I have, but it's only available in Europe because the FDA won't approve it. Now that is frustrating!!!

As a public accountant, I can tell you what nearly everyone in my town makes. Sure, there is disparity between the rich and poor, but I honestly don't have a problem with that. Not everyone is motivated by money and if someone makes a handsome profit, as long as it was done honestly, we should be happy for them and not try to tear them down. After all, the way the economy works, they will eventually end up spending some of their money on YOU.

I don't like Trump. He wasn't my pick for President, but he got elected deal with it!! He won't get everything he asks for and we've survived far worse presidents before. If nothing else, respect the office. Rather than going around complaining, I firmly believe that the LGBT community needs to spend more time serving others and less time being selfish.

At least that's this gurls (political) opinion.

    1. you might not want them to fund your transition, but do you want them to forbid anyone from performing your transition? Do you like them saying there is no such thing as transgender or that it is caused by satan? What about saying that no health insurance money should be used for such a thing? And what about the day when they lower wages so far that you cannot afford anything but the food you eat? All we ask is that democracy stand and that they don't make laws making people obey a religion they are not a member of and that there is a certain fairness in society, like decent pay scales and the ability to rent or buy a home anywhere they can afford.

  4. An interesting video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3qkf3bajd4

Yuri Bezmenov, ex-KGB agent defected to America in1970s, tells how LGBT rights and other human rights were destroyed in the socialist USSR. His story is chilling yet informing.
Ladies, please watch this video with laid back mood. Running time is 1h 21m 27s.
