At the risk of excommunication, I have to say that I do not support transwomen/girls participating in women's sports. No transman, to my knowledge want to compete in male sports, but the more aggressive trans community wants to take over women's spaces. Celia Bartoli, a noted soprano has said that singing roles written for travesti (boys with great voices castrated before puberty ) is incredibly difficult as even these once boys have a larger developed rib cage and much more breath capacity. If for singing, so for sports.
It is such a complicated issue... If someone grows up with male hormones and then transitions, they may have a physical advantage over the body they would have had been on male hormone blockers. Otherwise, there might be no athletic benefit to being TG.
Ultimately, I don't know how important it is. I anticipate that it is different case-by-case. I presume that the people fighting against it have very little actual knowledge of the specifics. I assume that they don't know either. I assume a lot of this discussion is driven by prejudice and not by established leadership wisdom.
If we generalize and assume that a TG player has an unfair advantage:, then the genetic girls might feel like they are being done wrong. If every team had TG players, then it would feel more fair. Would we need rules to regulate the ratio of TG to cis players? (Like what they do in co-ed softball.)
If we disregard the hypothetical unfair advantage and focus on the feelings/lives of the players, then letting trans kids play may trample on the feelings/lives of the cis players. It is not a solvable problem. It is a tension that needs to be managed. It is messy.
I have the opinion that we focus too much on some achievements in high school. Some kids will never do anything "great" after high school. Playing that state football game might be their greatest achievement in their memory. Therefore, I feel like we should not play up the smart kids. The gifted will move on to greater things and can be satisfied with those achievements. My opinion about this is niche, I am sure. (It is based on experiences seeing high school students freaking out about losing their valedictorian title due to a minimal GPA race with another student. And they may never mention being valedictorian after they achieve big things in college and career.)
It sticks out to me that I rarely hear discussions about FtM TG athletes.
It does not seem right that the supreme court of a nation needs to be involved in the decisions about who gets to play high school athletic sports. Let the school districts/leagues make their own decisions. But, to allow that to happen, people have to stop trying to control other people...
My thoughts are that athletics is a terrible avenue to fight for trans rights. There are much more important issues for the trans communities.
