A “Normal Man” at Home Depot

“Be a Normal Man” is the subject of a spam e-mail I received this morning. So, following the advice of that e-mail, I went to Home Depot to do some shopping like a “normal man.”

To my astonishment, there were more women shopping at Home Depot than men. The majority of the Home Depot sales associates were women, too.

I felt out of place, just like when I go shopping for girly things in a girly store while dressed as a boy. It felt like every woman in Home Depot was watching me to see what girly product I would fondle. I could read their minds, “What is HE going to do with that Torx screwdriver?”

I was so paranoid that I used the automated self-check-out instead of going to one of the cashiers (who were all women) to avoid the smirks and knowing looks that I was bound to receive while making my girly purchase.

Next time I shop at Home Depot, I will be sure to wear a dress, wig, makeup and heels so I won't feel out of place.

      Good point Fiona!
There is a Target near me with all self serve tills……unless you want to pay with cash. Then a sales clerk has to come over and the younger ones are completely befuddled as though you were trying to pay with pelts or gold dust, lol.

    2. Home Depots around here have human cashiers and self-serve cashiers.

  2. Did you know that a few years ago the Home Depot store manager in Meriden was a trans person? That the store in my town had a couple of trans clerks (One of whom used to be a former COS member.). And down in North Carolina there is also a HD store manger who’s trans, she used to be from CT.

Ha ha You just hit the nail on the head (no excuse for the pun) with how I feel when needing to just feel that knitted dress on the hanger even though I can feel eyes burning into me!

  5. I live in a pretty red, Southern area, and it’s still mostly men at places like Home Depot around here. So I haven’t had this experience — at least not yet.

But the idea of going out dressed how I want and actually feeling comfortable? That still feels pretty far off.

Still… stories like this give me hope that maybe one day it won’t be. 💜
