Muddy Water

My status at work changes on a weekly basis.

If you have been following my soap opera, you know my boss was let go two weeks ago. She was a great manager and supported whatever I wanted to do about being transgender.

My new boss was my old boss's boss. We have a great working relationship and she also supported me. She once told me that I could dress any way I wanted to at work.

I planned to sit down with her this week and discuss my plans to begin presenting as a woman at work. Problem is that she may no longer be my boss and I will be reporting to a guy on the West Coast who I never met!

I hope that by the end of the day, the situation will be clearer, but I am not holding my breath.

  1. If he is located in California, you should have no problem. Where is the HQ for the company?

    1. Trans employment rights are protected in CA. So there has to be a corporate policy on gender transitions in the workplace. These will be corporate wide and will be enforced in whatever state you would be in regardless of state laws. My employer has policies that are supportive and are valid in any state regardless of state law. So you should be good to go.

    2. I live and work in Connecticut and there are state laws that protect us. My company had policies in place that conformed with the laws before the laws was enacted, so I have been good to go for a long time... it is just the "go" part that is difficult.

  2. Dear Stana,

I hope you will get to continue to report directly to your accepting woman manager. I hope your company will make that happen by end-of-day today. I'm sorry your company seems to be working on their curve ball this Spring Training. They should learn to trust their fastball, and leave your current manager in the game.

    Love,

    Sheila.

Note to confused readers of this comment: Stana and I are both Major League Baseball fans, so she understands my baseball reference.

    1. I learned today that I officially transition between bosses in one week. I will deal with switching teams after the manager switch.

  3. I am so happy that you are getting close to presenting at work. I agree with others, that if you report to the California guy, chances are he will not have a problem with it. First he is far away and second he lives in a progressive state. There are some rural parts of Cali that are less progressive, but odds are in your favor.

    Good Luck

    Hugs,

    Susan

    1. San Jose is just southeast of San Francisco, so that is a pretty diverse area of California.

  4. Dear Stana,

This is a wonderful opportunity! Exactly what you have been asking the universe for!! Your old manager is okay with your presenting as a woman so that kind of sets the tone for new manager. The new manager has never met you in person and when he sees you, he will meet Stana so it is even better than the old manager who knew both sides of your personality. I only see positive out of this. We can't assume that the new manager, being from West Coast, will be open minded but if the company has set policies on transgender employees, it should work in your favor. In any case, I see only positive for you in this situation so go ahead and embrace the change sister!

    1. The company policies and state laws are in my favor, so my new boss will have to fall into line.
