Stuff 73: Making Scents

By J.J. Atwell

Scent of a woman?

Today I’d like to talk a little about scent.

Does your femme side have a signature scent? Hopefully something better than Right Guard. Maybe you went with a classic like Channel #5? Or something from Ferragamo or perhaps Jo Malone? How did you or how should you, pick it out?

Credit where it is due

I must admit that JJ has yet to settle on a signature scent. I’ve talked with several GG friends about what they wear and have gotten good suggestions. So I want to thank Alicia, Dee and Gigi for sharing their ideas. These are their comments and I’m just organizing them in a way that makes sense (scents?) to me.

How to choose

The hardest thing is deciding what scent you like. Obviously, some of that is simply what you smell when you try it on and how that pleases you. But getting there might take a while. My consultants suggest that you go to either a fancy department store or a place that specializes in perfumes. Smell a lot of the different brands and styles. From that, try to get a sense of what you like. Is it more floral? Spicy?

While testing these remember that your nose gets “tired” after a while. You should take a break between tests, perhaps smelling something like coffee beans to cleanse your olfactory senses.

The shop should have test strips available to use when sampling the product. But be aware that there will be a difference between how something smells on a test strip and how it smells on your body.

Alicia suggests that you get some samples that you can take home and try out. Wear them for a while (hours) to see how you like it over time. This also gives you experience in how the perfume interacts with your body chemistry over time. That’s right – something that smells good when first applied may not still be pleasing after a few hours.

How to wear

So, now that you’ve decided, how to you actually wear it? Just spray it on? Where? I’ve always heard that it should be applied to your pulse points like the inside of your wrists, the nape of your neck, and perhaps a dab in your cleavage. That advice still stands, but there is another method that works for many. Spray some into the air and walk through the cloud so that the little droplets land on your body and clothing.

I’ll be back

I hope you made some sense out of this and found your own scent. I welcome comments and suggestions here on Stana’s page or by email at Jenn6nov at-sign gmail dot com.

  1. I stopped wearing any scent because of what happened at work one day. At a production meeting a man went into anaphylactic shock when a woman with perfume on sat next to him.
His face and throat all swelled up. His eyes rolled in back of his head and he passed out. We monitored him while the ambulance came and they gave him Epinephrine and he came out of the shock, he was taken to the hospital. After that we made sure was had an Epinephrine pen at work.
It happened so fast it was scary, he went from chitchatting to unconscious in less than a minute.
So now I stopped all perfumes.

That is scary as anything I've heard. My wife is allergic to pineapple; my son to peanuts and tree nuts; my daughter to peanuts, all to extent of having severe reactions. If I ever had the acceptance of my wife I would not be able to wear a scent as my wife is asthmatic and perfume will set off an asthma attack. When she goes to stores, such as Macy's, she has to avoid the entrance where the perfume counters are.

    Much needed topic!
A good scent is needed as an often overlooked aspect of femulation is that some of us smell like blokes and can not help it. Not BO or anything, just the natural scent we all have. A good perfume can help mask this and make for a better presentation.

    1. I took care of the "guy" scent, among other things, by being on injectable estradiol valerate for over 13 years.

Years ago my ex girlfriend wore Tabu every time I smell it I think of her. I was stung by bee once and had a reaction. I avoid scents during the summer not to attract bees. My wife and I share White Dimonds in the winter. Great stuff JJ. You have great scents!

JJ here - in addition to having "great scents" I'm also a lover of puns.

  4. Scent is such a beautiful, subtle way to express ourselves. For me, it’s always been Love Spell from Victoria’s Secret.

I still remember going to the mall with a girl in high school. She bought a bottle, and I was instantly hooked. I didn’t even know why at the time—but it just felt right. Feminine, flirty, a little playful. It’s been my scent ever since, in boy mode and girl mode both.

Funny enough, I actually wrote about it just a few days ago: https://crossdresserchronicles.blogspot.com/2025/05/the-secret-weapon-i-wear-every-day-even.html. Hope it’s okay to share!

  5. When I started dating my wife, she wore Opium... I loved the scent and when I started living out as Kathryn, I used her Opium and it my go-to fragrance! But, back in ancient times when I dated a girl in college, she wore White Shoulders. It was **intoxicating!** So, I bought a bottle of that and now I can switch off, depending on how I am feeling. In addition, a scent from Hawaii, frangipani, became another alternative! But the secret I've found is no matter what smells good elsewhere, needs to be tried out on you to interact with your body chemistry! Great topic, JJ! See you soon. Kathryn

Hi Kathryn. My wife was big on Channel #5 but more recently has moved on to a variety of scents from Jo Malone. I "borrow" some of them at times. JJ
