Squeaky

Eighteen winters ago, Squeaky showed up on our front porch during a snowstorm wearing a red collar.

We assumed that a collared cat belonged to somebody, so I printed some flyers about our find, distributed them throughout the neighborhood, but there were no takers. So Squeaky, so-named because she squeaked rather than meowed, joined our four cats and two dogs.

Squeaky preferred humans to dogs and cats, so she usually hung out with the humans – my wife while I was at work and me while I was at home – and bullied the other pets if they crossed her path.

She seemed to be curious about my femulations. If she caught me getting crossdressed in our bedroom, she would hang back for the transformation. Or if she found me already crossdressed, she would often hang with me for awhile.

She outlived our dogs and other cats, so for the past three years, she has been our only pet. During that time, which coincided with my retirement, she became even closer to me. Every evening, she would snuggle up next to me while I was watching television or working at my computer and I would break from whatever I was doing to massage her.

About two weeks ago, she began acting oddly. She would just sit and stare at nothing. She began curling up in places where she never curled up before. She ate less or not at all and spent less time snuggling up with me. The Internet said she was dying and I made plans to take her to the vet.

By last Wednesday evening, she had not snuggled with me in days, so I scooped her up off the floor and placed her next to me on our sofa – our normal spot for snuggling. I massaged her back and head for about 20 minutes and then she left to return to the floor, where I found her lifeless body the next morning.

I miss her so.

  1. I'm so sorry to hear of you kitty passing. It's never easy losing a member of the family.

We have six kitties, one is very old and becoming thin. I fear that we're going to lose him soon. He's the only one who sleeps next to me on the bed.

I'm glad you have lovely memories of Squeaky. My thoughts are with you and your family.

  3. I'm so sorry to hear this news. It's always very sad when pets pass on as they are undoubtedly one of the family but I hope fond memories of her comfort you. 18+ years is a long life and I'm sure it was a happy one. Sue x

In the UK cats and dogs have a microchip inserted under their skin
If the animal strays its owner can be identified instantly

  6. So sorry for your loss. Something occured to me this weekend, a revelation about myself. My "Drab Side" has never been a cat person (or dog, or hamster, or whatever) - BUT . . .
When I an Julie, I adore our 2 cats. I now understand how the loss of a loved pet can affect someone.

  7. Stana, I am so sorry for your loss and I can totally understand your grief. We have always had cats and they all have been special, but none of them as special as my Max who is pictured in the avatar. He left me 4 years ago and I still miss him terribly. Whether it is people or pets that have a special place in our hearts, their absence is felt. Time helps.

  8. Sometimes the best pet is the one who adopts YOU. We had a stray cat work our city block. It would "work" various homeowners for a while and then move on. Eventually the cat decided to adopt the lady three doors down from me. Now we see it from time to time, but mostly it has become a house cat. Whenever we see it and its' human the woman is smiling and clearly loves "her" cat. And the cat doesn't look nearly as scruffy as it did prior to adopting a human. So, who adopted who?

  9. Stana, I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Squeaky. Eighteen-plus years is a long and well-lived life for a cat. My two cats have different reactions to my femulating. One treats me exactly the same as in male mode, the other keeps her distance instead of climbing into my lap.

  11. Our sincere condolences on the passing of your beloved Squeaky.
My wife and I have a shared philosophy "to let the cat pick YOU out".
Most certainly Squeaky knew where she belonged in this universe.
In the greater scheme of things, Squeaky was GOD'S cat.
You and your family were Sueakys steward.

Sad for you and your family this day.

It's tough to loose a beloved pet. I know how you feel about Squeaky going quantum. She will be back for a visit just to check on you. I know that from past pet's spirits showing up from seemingly nowhere.

  14. I feel so sad for you Stana. I gave up pets forever after both of the Siamese that I was raised with died within a couple of weeks of each other. It still hurts. Take care.

    Hugs.

Stana: you are now my hero. And not because you run a great website or help us all with our hobby, but because you took in a helpless animal and gave it a home for so many years (and really, so many Animals). I'm sorry you miss your friend, but my heart is warm knowing people like you exist.

    1. Thank you for the kind words. During the past 25 years, all six cats and one of our dogs were strays that we welcomed into our home. They surely made our lives more interesting and we were heppy to share our home with them.

I'm impressed with you short skirt and your curtain ring earrings!
