Dressing up like a girl

By Paula Gaikowski

Recently relocated and retired with a pandemic thrown in to boot, my wife has been struggling to make new friends. Lucky her lifelong friend Mary lives close by and it was the bubbly and vivacious Mary who suggested that they join a group of breakfast club women who met every other Saturday.

They meet for brunch at an upscale venue. It was my wife’s first time out in over a year. She pulled her work clothes out of storage, found her makeup in a box and did her nails.

She looked great when she came out of the bedroom, stylish, pretty and feminine. Mary arrived boiling over with enthusiasm and off they went to their lady’s brunch. Myself, a bit envious for reasons you all know.

Arriving home later that afternoon, her spirits were buoyed, she told all about the food, the restaurant and the women she met. Then she said it.

“It was so good to get out and dress up like a girl for a change. We all agreed that we need to do it for ourselves every so often.”

The way it came out resonated with me and I’ll assume with you, too. She could have said “dolled-up,” “dressed-up,” “put on some pretty clothes,” however, after almost a year of sweatpants and shorts, she was finally able to express her femininity with her peers.

It’s been a year since the pandemic put a kibosh on my business travel and my outings and life as Paula. And I’ll tell you. It would be good to dress up like a girl for a change –  you know we need to do it for ourselves every so often. (smile)

  2. I LOVE Dixie Longate! Her Covid-sequestered YouTube videos are wonderful, as are all her others. I didn't know much about her, but a one-nighter at Arena Stage in DC lured Mikki out to see her. She's so funny that sometimes I could hardly catch my breath I was laughing so hard. If you ever get the chance to see her live, run, don't walk to see her!!!

    1. I have always wanted to organize 'our group' to attend a Dixie Longate comedy concert, as occasionally she does play the Blumenthal....
But OTOH, that Zoom thing for the group sounds like a good time as we are ALL 'still in lockup'.

  3. I see palm trees and bright skies in your photo! Lucky you. We have had maybe 4 sunny days (here in the 'sunny south (?)' in the in the last 60+... Even our housecat is depressed. Prozac for cats?

Wife and I got Covid Vaccine shot #1 on Thursday (one week late due to the ice storm 'freezing' all air package/freight hubs)and now we have 26 days to go to until the #2 shot... And then 14 or so days until our level of antibodies build up...
The entire vaccine shot experience was fast, efficient, and painless--in case you are needle-phobic. We had pre-registered on our states internet site, and in spite of the crowd-all over age 65-- we were done in about 35 minutes.

We cant wait to be more mobile and be less paranoid about contracting the virus, besides, even though I am a good cook, I am quite tired of cooking all of our meals. I am ready for a Zaxbys salad or a Pizza Hut 'Veggie lovers-thin crust' pizza.

  4. A little info on Dixie: For a number of years doing her Tupperware House Party show, Dixie became the #1 sales person for Tupperware in both the USA and Canada! And I helped! Yes, I put my order in for a few items.

Seriously, go to YouTube, search on Dixie Longate and enjoy the many laughs.
