10 Films To Watch After Watching Netflix's Trans Film Documentary

ScreenRant recommended 10 films to view after watching Netflix’s eye-opening documentary about the depiction of trans people in film and TV.

According to ScreenRant, “Netflix's latest documentary, Disclosure: Trans Lives On Screen, is an in-depth look at how the lives and personalities of transgender people are depicted in films and television. While a tad divisive in its opinions (Is Tootsie offensive? Is there anything wrong with the film Boys Don't Cry? Should Silence of the Lambs be taken so seriously?) the film has its heart in the right place and it is sobering to hear the voices who, for decades, weren't allowed to be heard.”

ScreenRant lists ten films that “show the transgender community in a positive light... where filmmakers got it right.”

I have seen five of the recommended ten and don’t agree with all of their selections, but that’s just my humble opinion. I would add these five films in addition to ScreenRant’s suggestions: Better Than Chocolate, Breakfast on Pluto, Bruno, Just Like A Woman and my current favorite, The New Girlfriend.

  1. I watched Disclosure and enjoyed the rice through the good and the bad media depictions of us. They did - like a lot of clichés - start to get funny after a while. The cast certainly helped with that. At least we can see these tired old routes for what they are and, as you show the better films, writers will improve as trans awareness and involvement do too.

  7. We saw "The New Girlfriend" in our new film screening group. The main reason we screened it was because our group really likes the films of Francois Ozon, a French director whose films always are challenging and unexpected. This one was no exception. For films in the CD/TG genre my clear favorite if "A Fantastic Woman", a marvelous performance by a very talented transgender woman. But Ozon's very positive portrayal of a non-op TG woman is full of heart and empathy and a re-kindled once concealed love. The world is finally (kicking and dragging its'heels, I might add) getting around to treating us like the actual human beings we are. I guess I'll have to get around to buying a ROKU gadget and tap into Netflix, Hulu, etc.......

The cinefile in me can't resist more about Ozon's films. My favorite is "Frantz", but the most memorable is "Swimming Pool". It was our group's first Ozon film and has a twist that took us ALL by surprise. Highly recommended.

  8. Off topic, but here's something you may enjoy: Payless is planning to open hundreds of stores in the next few years.

  9. A lot of TG films are not necessarily great to watch with your wife etc, but The New Girlfriend is highly recommended. Saw it years ago and it really softened my wife’s outlook. Cillian Murphy in Breakfast on Pluto was excellent but the character could be so aggravating.

  11. Stana,
What handbag would you pair with that super Hatband outfit?
Perhaps, you could in due course post a photo of yourself in that outfit with the bag?

  12. my view regarding the netflix trans documentary (which i admit to not having seen, although i have watched many other similar programmes) is: if male-to-female transgender characters are going to be portrayed in films and tv series in a sympathetic light (as opposed to clowns for the straights to snigger at), then they should actually be played by male-to-female transgender actors. should a genetic female be cast in such a role (as in "transamerica", which i have no intention of watching), then to me it's just a cop-out that doesn't do the trans community any favours!

    1. i should have said that i don't have a problem with male actors playing transexuals if they are physically suited for the part (i.e. jared leto, cillian murphy, etc). but casting female ones is a travesty in my book!
