It's a Little Harder

Pensacola (FL)
Catholic High School, 1980

Attending my law school reunion Saturday is a little harder than most of my real life experiences en femme.

Besides trying to figure out what to wear (thank you for all your suggestions), I am nervous about attending.

I do not have a law practice, so I am not concerned about letting the cat out of the bag to my "peers" and negatively affecting my legal profession.

I had absolutely no nervousness during my Dayton trip two weeks ago, but then again, I had done Dayton successfully en femme twice before, so I knew what to expect and was completely comfortable with it.

I know I probably have nothing to worry about, but I am still a little nervous. Go figure.

I guess not knowing what to expect at the reunion is what is unsettling. But I am sure that as soon as I walk across the parking lot of the Basketball Hall of Fame and hear my heels clicking on the pavement, I will feel so comfortable in my skin that nothing will bother me.

The Law

By the way, some of you have asked about my law practice.

I never practiced law. I have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, but never used it.

I went to law school because I did not know what to do after graduating from college. Somebody suggested law, so I applied to a few schools, got accepted, attended class, and did not like it much. But I stuck it out for three years and got my degree.

While I waited for the results of the bar exam, I found a job as a writer (my first love) and never looked back.

Luckily, law school was cheap back then, so I did not invest a lot of money in an unfulfilled goal. Also I met some interesting people and made some great friends during the three-year stint.

Instead of going to law school, I should have gone to New York to live as a woman and work as a female impersonator, but the good ship Lollipop sailed without me a long time ago.

As it turns out, my law school is very active in transgender legal issues. The school launched a new Center for Gender and Sexuality Studies in January where students and alumni, "along with the general public, will gain a valuable new resource for education about how gender and sexuality have become an integral part of 21st century law."

The Center for Gender and Sexuality Studies has a new webpage on the school's website: www.law.wne.edu/gendercenter.

Yearbook Femulations Update

I uploaded 50 new foto finds from friend Starla to the flickr Yearbook Femulations collection. I also uploaded two photos of my 1976 law school Halloween party femulation.

OMG!The nervousness anytime we cross a threshold for the first time is always enough to keep the meek hidden well in their closets. Stana, you are anything but meek. You will do wonderfully! Keep your intelligence on high and your self on guard for the opportunity to shine.. Sounds like you have a connection with the school that you might want to peruse

  2. Say "Hi" to Jennifer for me.

I think you have met Jennifer before at one of the lobbying events for our bill. She is also the faculty adviser for OUTlaw the school of law LGBT organization.

  3. I have to agree with Joan. You have just gotten too used to your "routine" situations en femme. If you had decided to do this when many other en femme outings were new, you wouldn't be having these thoughts. You will do fine. Remember, you are just being yourself and that who they expect to attend the reunion even if it is isn't quite the way they remember you. You are just going to be the biggest puzzle when they try to imagine how the graduation picture became you current picture :) As Joan said, you might pick up a gig, paid or unpaid, based upon your status. At a minimum, it is another outreach opportunity! If you need some backup, let me know. WNEC is in my old neighborhood.

  4. Diana --- Jennifer is not on the reunion guest list, so I don't think she will be there. Too bad - I would have loved to chat with her.

  5. Dear Stana,

Is there any way to view the latest photos you upload to FLICKR? I wanted to see your 1976 femulation photo, but don't know how to easily find it. Your "Collections" have a number of "Folders" named "Yearbooks A" through "Yearbooks Z". If you know of a way for me to search by your "Upload Date" (most recent first), please post that info. Thanks, sweetie.

    Love,

    Sheila.

You will do well. Last night my college did a small meet and greet in NYC for alum who had become attorneys. There were about 30 present, mostly folks who graduated in the 1970s. It was put on by the political science department and two of my old profs recognized and remembered me. There were others who I had been in contact with over the years and still a few others who remembered me after having no contact over all these decades.

The 'vibe' was very nice...pleasant and professional. Lawyers are fairly unflappable as a crew. I think that if I had shown up en femme I would have been equally well received.

I see your reunion as a major source of 'T' outreach. You will be well received and you will have a great time.

  8. Dear Stana,

Thank You. Yes, the link to your Photostream in today's post worked perfectly. I think your previous links to FLICKR have been to your Collections page, rather than your Photostream. But, I don't have a FLICKR account, so maybe I just misunderstand how to use it.

    Love,

    Sheila.
