You, Me and Bullies Revisited

First they came for the drag queens, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a drag queen.

Then they came for the transgenders, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a transgender.

Then they came for gay marriages, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not in a gay marriage.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

I received some pushback over Friday’s post, You, Me and Bullies

Some of the pushback was knee-jerk anti-George Soros reaction (just mention Soros in a positive light and some peoples’ heads explode).

The majority of the pushback was related to actor Charlize Theron’s unfettered support of drag queens.

Theron is the parent of a trans-child and my guess is like any mother, she is standing up for and protecting her kid. Thus, she is supporting drag queens because after they come for drag queens, they may come for trans-kids (although, in some ways, they are already coming after trans-kids).

I have written here in the past that I am not a big fan of drag, but they have my full support. If you don’t care if they go after drag queens, please be aware that some of the anti-drag laws do not call out "drag queens" per se, but use terms like “female impersonators” instead. That means you and me, Bucko.

  1. It still amazes me when I see someone supposedly in the LGBTQ camp come out for a certain political party which is trying to erase us.

  2. So true, Sweetie. To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, "If we don't all Hang Together - we surely will hang separately."

The Nazis are in full flight. True Conservatives do not take away people's rights, but these are Nazis, make no mistake. They will come for us.

Here in the UK we have The Daily Mail , a newspaper that everyday attempts to crucify the Transgender community. How far they are willing to dig to slur the community has no limits.

all of these "laws" will face all kinds of legal problems and most will be cancelled for which we can take heart.however-in the interim the laws and publicity re: them will surely have jacked up an atmosphere of hate I submit that we should be less concerned about the laws and more concerned about the dangers we now will face from the nuts out there if we go out en femme

Maybe some non-supporters or those keeping silent will wake up when a man in drag at a Halloween party gets busted. Or if a son gets busted on November 13th which is National Sadie Hawkins Day. Don't think it will not happen.

    1. Especially if it happens to the current squeeze of Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has often appeared in drag -- on TV!

Stana, you are so right. There is a reason it is called a culture war. Did you see the news today about the violence at Target stores relating to their Pride displays? Apparently, it was focused in particular on bathing suits that allow room for tucking! You have to be blind not to see that the TG/CD community is under serious attack. We are a marginalized community. Yet, too many of our community are not yet “up in arms” about all this. Lisa P

Makes one wonder what the future holds for all those high school "Womanless Beauty Pageants" that seem to be quite popular, especially in the southern (read: "Red) U.S. states.Oh!, the irony...

  10. I've often commented that I prefer "female impersonation" as opposed to "drag". Those older shows such as The Jewel Box Revue and The 82 Club had entertainers the average person couldn't determine whether they were women or not. But even then the comic impersonators tended to overdo their makeup and costumes, and I didn't have any problems with them. But as Drag became the predominant form of this entertainment my appreciation of satire came to the fore and I learned to appreciate this modification of the entertainment I had a true love for. Do I miss the live singing? Sure I do! and we have to look more closely to still find examples. For instance, I LOVE Jinkx Monsoon. She is big and brassy and now she's on Broadway playing Big Mama in "Chicago". This makes me dream about my first love -- LaVerne Cummings.

Back in "the olden days" there were oppressive laws attacking female impersonators. As feminine as we looked, or tried to be, some laws required we wear a certain amount of men's clothing while dressed. And the police were very quick to bring out the "Paddy Wagon" and make a public spectacle of arresting "queers". So attacking our community with oppressive laws is nothing new, but this time it's scarier. We're looking at felonies instead of misdemeanors. And the laws have expanded from just us to a socio-political attack on what people can read, or look at, and how soon will it be before even listening is added to the growing list of "forbidden speech"?

Stana is right on target, and we need to be on full alert. We're a small community, but the trans visibility "surge" has brought much notice to those of us under the very large umbrella of "Transgender". If your school board is attacking us in any way we need to go to those meetings and voice our First Amendment rights! We need to look at all the aspects of candidates, including their voting records. A vote against us disqualifies them from having my vote. Do a search on YouTube on these politicians and see what comes up -- that's how I found MTG's squeeze in drag!

We're a small community, but we can still make ourselves known. Speak up, do our homework, be active opposing our nemeses when they run for office or propose DeSantis-type laws. Squeaky wheels really do get attention (just ask any parent)!
