I watched MTV a lot during what I consider was its heyday, that is, when it played music videos 24/7. My watch occasionally paid off when a femulator appeared in a video. Some of the music video femulators were drop-dead gorgeous, while others were men in dresses.
Recently I took a tour of YouTube searching for music video femulations and I uncovered three in which the band members start the video in boy mode, but end the video en femme.
The three culprits are:

DeleteI think my 2 favorites are Steff II, and Heterosexual man. The singer in Stef II appears as a genderfluid person, and both videos have good femulations! Having seen Dave Foley femulate before it was easy to spot him.

The funny thing is when the BBC first saw the clip they must have watched only the start because they premiered it on a lunchtime TV show! The blowback when people saw the femulating part was huge.
Blowback on a video. Many years ago I was at a Washington Caps game -- it was at the time the song "YMCA" was becoming a crowd favorite. Whomever was in charge of the big screen at Cap Center had the idea to show the video. Clearly he hadn't checked it out, as it was done in a (very) gay bar. Amazing how the crowd quieted down so quickly.

unlike their american counterparts, british rock stars have long had a penchant for appearing en femme in promo pics and even videos. other than bowie, the best femulator in that regard was queen drummer roger taylor dressed as a schoolgirl for "i want to break free". of course he and the rest of the band dragging up was seen as a hoot in pantoland, but it apparently more-or-less did for them career-wise in the states!

ReplyDeleteA big favourite of mine will always be the music video of "Living on the Edge" by Aerosmith.
ReplyDeleteI tend to have a very good radar for this, but the first time I saw the music video and they showed the hot teacher.. I had no idea! Granted music videos are always edited very choppily.. so you don't see the teacher for a long time.
But the end of the video.. with the reveal.. wow!! Blew my mind!! :)

It's interesting and strange,that a male who dresses as girl, not gorgeous, but pretty or passable one, there still problems, why that alone is long discussion!
ReplyDeleteFor a list of Japanese bands search You Tube for visual kei. This is a style they went through where boy bands dressed in elaborate clothing, usually baroque and most if not all were gothic dresses. Malice Mizer has one member that exclusively dressed as a goth-lolita (Mana). Versailles is another good band for this example.
