Grocery Shopping

Like a good housewife, I do the grocery shopping once a week. Aldi first for the bargain prices, then Stop & Shop to pick up whatever Aldi didn’t have.

I usually shop between 8:30 and 9:30 in the morning and at that hour, both stores are eerily quiet. Which is why I was a little surprised this week to encounter a crossdresser at Stop & Shop.

A large, tall woman, she appeared to be in her 30s, wearing a maxi dress and long, curly brunette hair (not a wig). Little or no makeup, her face read unmistakably male, and her expression—well, let’s just say it wasn’t a happy one.

We crossed paths twice—once in an aisle and again after checkout—so I had the opportunity for a couple of discreet, second looks. Enough to confirm what I thought I was seeing.

This wasn’t my first crossdresser sighting while grocery shopping, but the timing struck me. It came just days after I’d written about whether crossdressing is becoming more common. Sometimes the world has a way of underlining your questions.

And for the record, I was shopping en homme that morning. Though I’ll admit, I’ve made the same trip en femme more than a few times in the past.

And so it goes.

  1. Sometimes I wonder how many cross dressers I have missed out in the wild. Those who were definitely MTF cross dressers left so many tells. It was as if they were making a statement, not to attempt to pass.

  2. She probably chose that time to shop as there are less shoppers that may notice her and a shorter check out line which can be the biggest problem. A lot of men enjoy dressing up and ask yourself at the next event…or grocery aisle…..who is a CD? Hugs Brenda. Stana now has me wondering if anyone read me on my out and abouts at the mall?

  3. If I wear heels to the grocery store, I won't need any help reaching items on the top shelf. But if I wear flats, maybe I'll meet someone tall, dark, and handsome willing to help a damsel in distress. Choices, choices...

    1. I had to chuckle. I'm six foot and constantly asked by short women to get things off the top shelves at a grocery store. Sometimes I see a woman standing and gazing up trying to figure out how to get that can of corn down, so I offer. I tell them my wife is also "vertically challenged." BTW, that top shelf shows whether or not the store in up on its customer service. When I was in college I worked at a grocery store and one of my tasks was to drag forward cans on the top shelf, so they were at least visible.

  4. I prefer to do my household errands en femme. I visit our local WinCo (grocery) so often as Julie that when I venture there en homme it feels - - - "weird".

  5. I don’t see cross dressers anymore, I only come across younger non-binary and older transitioned. We who live in the temporary zone are a dying breed, slowly going out with a whimper. My friend regularly warns me about the changing attitudes and to be careful, I go about as I always have but perhaps others are being more cautious (outside of areas and events that provide more safety)

  6. I wonder why unhappy. Perhaps you should have just given her a small smile the second time as you passed.
