Why Go Out and About?

On Thursday, Joey commented, “We have the compulsion to dress as women. But there is more than that. We also have the secondary compulsion to go out in public this way. That is VERY interesting to me. Why do we do this? Do we do this with everything we do, and it is just a standard part of humanity, or is this unique to crossdressing?”

Speaking for myself (your mileage may vary), I believe

I am very meticulous about how I crossdress. My makeup takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 45 minutes. Dressing, another 15 minutes. Prepping to dress en femme, also known as “shaving,”can take various lengths of time depending on how many body parts I have to shear. Add some time for putting an outfit together and picking out the right jewelry to go with my outfit. My goal is to femulate as authentically as possible. It’s hard work, but I love my job!

Long ago, I abandoned dressing pretty just to sashay around the house and snap a few photos. After all that work, I want to go out and experience the world as a woman.

As a senior citizen (old lady), I am kind of invisible, so I probably “pass” because no one is paying any attention to me. When I do interact with a civilian and they treat me like a lady, it is very affirmative; it affirms my femulation – how I looks a lady and how I act as a lady.

Working as a “booth babe” at Hamvention is always very affirming. Countless guys smiled and/or winked at me when they walked past our booth. Women smiled at me too, but in a different way. As you know, there is a big difference between a man-to-woman smile and a woman-to-woman smile.

On one occasion, a guy asked me a question that I could not handle, so I jokingly said, “You'll have to ask him (referring to one of the guys staffing our booth) because I am just a ‘booth babe.’”

His response was, “And a very good booth babe!”

It’s moments like those when I am out and about that I know that all my hard work has paid off.

And by the way, going out and about en femme is a lot of fun!

  1. If you are one of the many who feel that your feminine presentation is a reflection of what is happening on the inside, then going out and being yourself is entirely natural! Also, the “work” involved—that must be repeated almost entirely from scratch each and every time—is a lot so it would be a complete shame to NOT go out! (I would not want to calculate how many equivalent days I have spent getting ready for the approximately 1000 times I have been out over the years)

There are also many differences between how a skirt or dress feels outdoors compared with pants
For example a gentle breeze can cause a skirt to brush against your legs with every step
Some can be more intersting than pleasant such as such as having to rely on fast reactions to keep your skirt down in windy weather
If it rains , pantihose dries much quicker than pants do

    Stana,
I totally agree with you. I never dress pretty and stay in the house. I always go out somewhere and interact with the world.
As you say, it is fun being the woman that I am and doing things out and about. Civilians need to see us and realise that CD/TGs are very nice people and we are an important part of society. Plus, we are excellent dressers.
    You look fabulous Stana.

  5. Well said, Sweetie. The desire to be Out And About and to be seen is strong - it's almost like creating a work of art and then hanging it in the closet. Not what the art was designed for.

  6. We are social creatures. We dress this way not only because we like how it looks and feels but because we wish to make a statement to those around us as to how we wish to be perceived. When I take the time to shave everywhere, put together an adorable feminine outfit and get fully made up, I want to show it off and have everyone I encounter say to themselves “ Wow, that person is very comfortable with presenting as indisputably feminine!”Women consistently look foreword to being complimented and feel attractive when they are out and about in dresses. Why is being male a reason I shouldn’t have these feelings too?

  7. Yay! I made a difference!
I hear you. I find that I won't bother to dress pretty if I don't have anywhere to go. But, I started going out wearing whatever I could get away with early on. I did not take any time to get ready. I just needed to go outside. Maybe just a walk around the house. I had to go out. No explanation...

My motivations for going out are pretty much the same as others have mentioned. I would get bored stiff dressing solely in the privacy of my home. I enjoy the interaction with people in real life, and to be honest, these interactions give me a sense of validation and acceptance.
