Reader comments to my Your Crowning Glory post moved me to write this addendum to that post.
Large Caps
Many of you are big girls with big heads (myself included). Big heads call for big wigs (large cap size wigs).
Some average cap size wigs can be stretched to fit our big heads, but the fit can be tight, so tight that they pop off your head. They also can leave welts on your forehead and even cause headaches (been there, done that).
Large cap size wigs are the solution. The problem is that there is a limited number of large cap styles. I searched the Internet and turned up a wig seller with 74 large cap styles (click here to see the 74). There may be a few more, but my guess is that 74 is close to the maximum number of available large cap styles.
Personally, I have large cap wigs from Envy, Noriko and Raquel Welch and I am a satisfied customer.
Roots
I love wigs with dark roots.
For more authenticity, buy a wig with dark roots. The average person will be fooled thinking no one would wear a wig with visible dark roots – it’s counter-intuitive. So dark roots “prove” that your wig is the real thing.
I lost count how many times I have received compliments about my dark root hair. Even when I was doing outreach with an audience that was aware that I was a man in a dress, I received comments indicating that the commenters thought my wig was the real thing.
Dark roots make a difference and definitely increase your passibility.

I have found that the only people who know I’m wearing a wig are other members of the tribe. I was friends with a girl for months and she was shocked when I told her that my new hairstyle was not the result of a salon but an internet shop.
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting idea. Non matching roots are usually the second thing I think of when asked what are the things that tell the world that your appearance is not a priority for you. Not making our appearance a priority is not a bad attribute per se. But for a crossdresser it sends a message to me that one is not serious about trying to pass.
ReplyDeleteMany cisgender people do not make the effort to color match heir eyebrows either. Non color matched eyebrows are the first thing which comes to mind when I think if things which tell the world know you are not serious about trying to pass.
Yet mistakes which are the most pervasive can become perceived as normal. As such I now find your argument very persuasive.
Even a cis woman who dyes her hair is going to show a bit of root after a few weeks, unless she goes to the salon twice a month, but every 4-6 weeks is not a long stretch.
DeleteDepending on colour mix in the wig, it can be very subtle too. My usual colour is a dark blonde with medium brown roots, but also has brown in the hair as well. It looks like a blonde highlight job.
On a mono top wig the knots of the dark roots can stand out, but I use powder concealer in the part to hide them and make the fine lace disappear!

That reminds me of eyes. Amazing how many blonde women have brown eyes, when almost all blonde MEN have blue or gray eyes.
DeleteI’ve been finding that a good wig does help us pass, but even if are clocked as male, if our hair is perceived as our own, it helps with acceptance. We are perceived as a male who grew their hair into a female style, so I think we are perceived as female full time or having transitioned. It always seems more accepted that we are female full time vs. male somedays and female on others, the latter of which blows the minds of most a right bit.
