Female vs. Woman

Must Read Dept.

My BFF, Cyrsti of Cyrsti's Condo fame, took the words right out of my head when she wrote her Saturday post, Female vs Woman.

Poster Girls Dept.

A recent Moda Operandi e-mail advertisement (see above) can be a poster for us gurls on how not to femulate women.

The young 20-something models in the advertisement may be dressed appropriately for a Saturday girls' night out, but not for a lady's day out or even a lady's night out.

Unless you are very gifted in your appearance, dressing in public like the young women in the advertisement will brand you as something or other and neither is flattering. Someone might even call you (heaven forbid) a "transvestite."

My grandmother always said "dress like a lady" having transitioned late in life in my mid sixties those words always play in my mind, whether regular day wear or going out I dress like a lady.

  3. I had a difficult time trying to understand Cyrsti's distinction in definitions. Here are two references that I think explain the differences between female, woman, and lady

And your poster girl observation, well they could be transvestites if you look closely at their faces. Hence the highly obnoxious issue today with some not so attractive women being called transgender or something worse. Actually, you'd be hard pressed to find any American woman dressed that well today. Not so in other cultures. While at IHOP today here in Merida, a young woman walked in wearing a fitted white a-line dress and the skirt just barely covered her butt when standing. No way she was going to not show more when sitting. Her outfit was shorter than most women here. The average women here wear shift dresses from just above the knee to mid thigh or alternatively colorful printed maxi skirts

It's been my general experience (of course there are exceptions) that I get more grief/tension about being transgender from males than anyone female/women. That's why (again with exceptions) I usually opt for female medical providers. As I said, I do have one long-term exception and he has been fabulously supportive, as have all the women nurses/staff in his office.
