Stuff 115: Womanly Gestures

By J.J. Atwell

How Women Move

I suspect we all learned at an early age that women move differently than men. Some of that is more physiological than societal. Because women typically have breasts, a narrow waist and wider hips, their walk is different that men. Men tend to walk is a very rigid, straightforward manner leading with their chest.

CD’ers can try to emulate a woman’s walk but it takes a lot of practice and we need to constantly remind ourselves to loosen up. A good practice is to have somebody video you as you walk while dressed. Front, side and back views. Critically review them and you’ll probably see some things you can improve on. Try this several times concentrating on one specific area. Perhaps how the hips move? Or adopting a more leaned back stance? Maybe you need more pelvic tilt. After each adjustment, perform a critical analysis of your videos again. Once you’ve gotten it down then make it a habit to practice regularly. You don’t even need to be dressed, although a pair of heels might help. Remember, don’t clomp!

It’s Not Just the Walk

There are many more things that you’ll notice women doing. The casual slipping a finger under their collar to reposition a bra strap. Or sweeping their skirt under them when sitting down. For them, deeply ingrained. For us, its a novelty, if we even think about it at all. I fail at these things regularly. Sigh.

A few more things you might notice are maybe tucking hair behind the ears to keep it out of the way especially while eating. Re-applying lipstick after you eat. Of course, handling your bag has to become normal. Keeping it close to your body when walking and making sure it is secure. Hanging the bag across the back of a chair when sitting down.

I’ll Be Back

The picture above is the result of me giving ChatGPT a straight on picture of my guy self and asking it to change gender. I like the result and might just go shopping for a similar wig.

  1. i do wish we’d see more wives in public helping their husbands buying their dresses & underwear. this is rare today but i hope the future is different. however the online environment dies present a safe space for both partners & most wives remain more comfortable with that arrangement

  2. I just love adjusting my bra strap and paying attention to my skirt. I love adding jewelry and this is what makes it even more special to be a woman

    1. It is a fun thing, isn't it. Just one of those special things that most men just can't appreciate. Their loss. JJ

  3. One major way to achieve womanly gestures is by wearing heels. You take smaller steps with heels instead of large steps with flats. Also, there is more of a feminine sway. That's what I notice in videos when I wear them. And as mentioned in today's article, there is a matter of breasts, such as what I have. However, I have to adjust the bra straps so they don't slip. I'm a member of my church choir, so I wear a cassock and a surplice, so adjusting bra straps would really be awkward.

    1. Excellent observation about heels! Of course the higher the more sway. Hugs JJ

    2. As an almost 74 year old man, 75 mm (3 inch) heels are my limit. There are two or three women at my church who consistently wear heels. No other man in my church wears heels or dresses.

  4. When I go out for an evening drive which ends up with a stroll in a safe residential neighborhood with a mix of restaurants and shops I always wear a dress.....not a pair of pants in my femme wardrobe. It becomes second nature, when getting into a car to always first sit on the seat while smoothing the backside of the dress, and, then swinging the body into position. It looks totally awkward entering a car like most guys: sticking the right foot in first. It is not uncommon in the business district to see professional women carrying a tote with their heels while wearing a clean pair of athletic shoes. The hillside makes it a challenge to wear a narrow heel, so many women only wear the heels at work. It may be a good ruse for a CD-er to do the same while strolling, so the stumbling on concrete sidewalks does not happen. You just have to be conscious not to take long strides.

Jen, I like the topic of your piece.

I wish more of our gender-gifted sisters would study ciswomen more closely and try to emulate them. I find it fascinating how women move more gracefully. I watch women online and in person, noticing that everything they do is more expressive. Even the smallest of motions.

For me, I'm also highly interested in taking feminine voice lessons again (previously stopped in tracks by covid, then finances).
I feel that we as cders, trans, etc. should emulate ciswomen more because just being able to buy a wig and high heels doesnt automatically make you a woman. It's just a start.

And as long as I have a soapbox... One trait I have noticed among some of our sisters is that even if they look like a woman, they still behave like men.... eg. taking over conversations, being loud, being trannier than thou.
That's not the way most women operate. Women tend to be listeners, sympathetic, supportive of other sisters (I hope). Honestly, our sisters who behave this way indicate to me that they might not be as supportive of women in general, and some may even be misogynistic. I find that sad.
