How to Make Up

On Monday, Julie mentioned one of her pet peeves: makeup tutorial videos.

Julie wrote, “I have seen far too many of these that are titled ‘Crossdressing Make-up Tips’ and are full-out glam/drag. HARDLY the kind of makeup one would wear to the grocery store on a Saturday afternoon.”

That’s so true.

If you search YouTube for crossdressing makeup tips, most of what you find leans heavily toward glam or drag looks. While those can certainly be fun, they’re not exactly practical for everyday life. Most of us aren’t trying to look like we’re headed to a stage performance; we just want makeup that works for ordinary situations.

Fortunately, if you separate the wheat from the chaff, there are useful videos out there for ladies like us.

One of my favorites comes from Schellea’s “fabulous50s” YouTube channel. Her videos are aimed at mature women, and although Schellea is a cisgender woman, many of her tips translate very well for our crowd. (I’ve incorporated quite a few of her techniques into my own daily makeup routine.)

Schellea has posted more than 800 videos on YouTube. Her more recent content focuses mostly on fitness, but her earlier material includes a very helpful collection of makeup and fashion tutorials. To find them, go to the channel’s video page and then click the “Oldest” option to sort the videos. That will take you straight to the earlier makeup content.

If you’re looking for practical, everyday makeup guidance rather than glam or drag, her channel is well worth a look.

And so it goes.

  1. Fully agree. I'm of the age needing help to make a woman of my age, not a twenty something, wanting club glamour etc.

Yesterday had a professional guide me through the process, teaching me to do one half of my face etc. Stunning result, but then showed up the need for new hair, if nothing else. Not a cheap lesson and now I have to buy the cosmetics and brushes she used and then start to practice. A really good miror and great lighting help enormously.

If I could add just one recommendation for those of us that still might need help concealing those troublesome masculine facial features. Many cis-woman makeup tips, even the ones for mature women, don't effectively meet our needs. I look for makeup tips that help conceal/camouflage flaws. Most of the tips I use to camouflage my flaws revolve around contouring. To camouflage my masculine facial flaws I contour even when I am doing everyday makeup.

  4. "Things escalated." Isn't that how things go with crossdressing? I was simply curious about the way pantyhose would feel on my legs, and now I'm searching for the right shade of lipstick to wear with my dress!
