Stuff 78: Dream Outfits

By J.J. Atwell

What is a “dream outfit”?

Remember the movie Dream Girls? It came out in 2006 and was loosely based on the Motown girl group The Supremes. Growing up, I loved The Supremes and their lead singer Diana Ross when she went out on her own. I’m not sure what I loved more, the music or the outfits they wore. That leads me to today’s topic about dream outfits.

What to you mean “dream outfit”? I’m defining it as that dress you lust for. The one you saw on a woman in the street, in a picture or on the big screen or perhaps on a red carpet award show. Actually, it doesn’t have to be a dress. It could be any great looking outfit. Something you really want to try on just to see how you look in it.

What would be your dream outfit?

From trolling the typical CD sites, I see many interested in wedding dresses or fancy prom style dresses. I’ll say that I do love the thought of those. Especially if they would look good on my (enhanced) body. But for this exercise, don’t worry about reality. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have to have that perfect body for this exercise.

So let’s hear it. How about a cheerleader outfit? French maid? 50’s housewife? Square dance girl? A slutty streetwalker? Lots of stereotypes we could fashion ourselves after. I’ll admit that some of those are interesting, but others seem to be offensive to me. Should we include outfits that basically denigrate women? A tough call.

Do you actually have a dream outfit?

So how many of you really have that dream outfit in your closet. Or better yet, have worn it out in the real world.

My answer to those two questions is “no.” I don’t have my dream outfit, so I haven’t worn it out in the real world either. I will say that my dream outfit would probably be something slinky, probably red sequined and glittery shoes to go with it.

I’ll be back

I’ll be back with more Stuff for sure. Comments are welcome either here on the blog or by email to Jenn6nov at-sign gmail dot com. JJ is always looking for more stuff so let me know what you would like to read about.

Dream outfit JJ? For me it has to be evening gowns. Back in the era of more formal events; women attired in formal evening wear were lusted by me, or should I say their outfits were the object of my desire. In the '80's and '90's my wife and I attended many formal events and I had 3-4 tuxedos to choose from. Beginning in 1990, and after joining a crossdresser organization, and attending conventions and gender themed events all over the country, my attire shifted from tuxedos to women's formal wear.
My wife and I attended "The night of 1000 Gowns" in NYC in the late '90's into the 2000's as well as many other gender conventions that had semi-formal banquets.
Alas there are fewer formal events these days and the culture has been more casual in attire for a couple decades. It is even such that fewer men even own suits anymore and women cocktail dresses.
If you look at my Flickr site you will even see me in a few gowns from past events.

    1. Hi Angel, going to formal events such as those dressed enfemme sounds like a dream! Thanks for sharing! I could imagine arriving at the event and a gentleman opens my car door and my leg stretches out before me through the thigh-high slit in my silky gown and everyone asks "who's that girl?" Sigh...

What a great story Angel. I can only imagine how it must have felt to be out in that attire. JJ

Only sleep comes to a dreamer. When he awakens it’s gone!

  3. Hi JJ. My dream dress? If I had the body, I'd lust after the red dress worn by Number 6 in the miniseries "Battlestar Galactica!" OMG! As far as having that wonderful gown in my closet, I have two gowns that I wore for our pageant. Elegant and gorgeous. Hugs, Kathryn

  4. JJ - red, slinky and glittery? Look at Youtube. Olivia Newton John's "Suddenly" with Cliff Richard. Long, red ,sequined... devastating. Of course, it helps to look like ONJ did...

  6. "Dream outfit" as in pick just one?? That's crazy talk haha! I have a dream outfit for every event, season, whim, mood... Almost every Femulate Her outfit is a dream outfit for me. I guess if I was required to narrow it down a bit, I would say that I would adore a closet full of poofy frilly satiny (dare I say campy) Stana-short 80s prom dresses in each color of the rainbow that I would wear on a random Tuesday with matching heels...just because;)

I agree Elise that it would be hard to pick just one. Feel free to splurge! JJ

I have day dreams of being en femme that is usually associated with some sort of activity. When it comes to evening gowns it is associated with a beauty pageant. In my youth I was tall and lightweight. I was six foot and 160 pounds at one time with very very sun bleached blond hair. I envision myself in a long red evening gown with lots of tulle. Of course, matching red heels, silver tiara, silver crown. In a more domestic setting I'd love to be wearing a white blouse, black A-line skirt with black heels and hosiery while serving the women in my wife's book club. Of course, I'd be sure the blouse is semi sheer to show off the lace of a pretty white slip and bra straps. I do own several two tone slips: white bodice with black skirt which is great for that look. One can only dream of more acceptance.
