Stuff 109: Spending On Ourselves

By J.J. Atwell

Being A Woman Isn’t Cheap

Something that I’ve noticed over the years is that women spend a lot of money on themselves. For some things, it’s society that pushes them to spend more. There seems to be a pervasive thought that the more expensive a product is the more desirable.

Think about the lowly handbag. They are available in price ranges from $30 to thousands. It seems like a lot of women are carrying around a Louis Vuitton bag these days. If you’re not aware, those things carry very large price tags. Not as large as a Hermes bag, but still quite something.

I’m sure that some women splurge on things like that as a reward. They’ve accomplished something significant or just survived a particular challenge, and this is the reward. Not a bad idea really. Setting realistic, but stretch-goals for yourself and rewarding yourself when you achieve them can be a good strategy to push yourself.

Back On Topic

In general, do you think women need more stuff? Think about cosmetics. A guy just needs some moisturizer and a comb for his hair. A woman needs an array of cosmetics just for her face. Yes, that’s something that us CDs know from experience.

Women also tend to wear more jewelry everyday. Some things are simple like pearl stud earrings and a pendant. Other things move further up the scale in terms of price. A guy might spend money on a fancy watch, a ring and perhaps a bracelet. Women spend or get gifted, a lot of jewelry which they swap out depending on the occasion.

We know that women have a lot of societal pressure about how they look and act. It seems to me that this pressure is a major factor in the whole women’s fashion industry. I sometimes use the term “cheap” when talking about my femme stuff. I should probably say inexpensive instead. After all, it’s not easy being pretty, but it’s also not pretty being easy.

Do You Spend A Lot?

I’m curious, as you accumulated your femme wardrobe and accessories did you spend a lot? How did you acquire your stuff? Did you shop in brick and mortar stores? Online shopping? Hand-me-downs? Thrifting? For me it’s a combination of all of those.

My biggest spend on a single item, besides my breast forms or wig, is probably a dress for the beauty pageant my local group puts on. But even that was under $100. OK, so the breast forms were $300+ as was the wig. Those were my biggest spendings. But this is not a competition. Spending more doesn’t make you or me a winner. Nobody is keeping score except for your bank.

By far, my cheapest spending has been items I bought while thrifting. The wife of one of my local CD group members is an avid thrifter and I’ve benefited from her guidance several times when hitting the stores. I really haven’t tracked my spending there, but the least expensive item is probably $5 for a top. and maybe $10 for a dress or shoes. Yes, some were more expensive than that but they were still significantly cheaper than buying new. Plus there is the thrill of the hunt! I encourage you to try out thrifting. Goodwill stores have a policy where every week there is a different color that qualifies for 50% off the tag price. That can really result in a bargain.

I’ll Be Back

I’d love to hear how you acquired your femme wardrobe. I’ll be back with more Stuff in the next installment. Comments are welcome either here on the blog or by email to Jenn6nov at-sign gmail dot com. JJ is always looking for more stuff so let me know what you would like to read about.

  2. well I certainly spend far more on my femme side ! I blame On-line shopping !, it’s so easy. Then again my femme side always wants a differernt outfit for each date & of course new underwear 😉 A woman must always look her best you know 😌 Oh & then there’s the dry cleaning bills !

  3. Thrift shops like Savers/Value Village are charging ridiculous prices now due to their stock listing. $25 for used Payless shoes in CD sizes is ridiculous. If you dig through racks there will be surprises. Hugs brenda.

  4. I love to shop on Poshmark for dresses and shoes, Temu for jewelry and odds-n-ends, and then Shein for shoes and the occasional dress. Have to be careful with sizes on Temu and Shein, but once you find the right size they're true to size. Regards, Randi

  5. When I was young my mother would search through my room 'cleaning' looking for drugs she found my makeup and came to accept it, she would tell me I was spending too much by buying from department stores for designer brands. But I argued the women taught me how to apply everything properly. I'm 72 this year. My mom always said that she love me no matter what, just wanted me to be happy.

  6. It is funny because I've always been hit by the high price tags. Even when I was dressing totally "straight", I still appreciated the style and cut of women's fashion. So even then, I was buying women's fashion on the fringe. But I always freely told people about it. I always felt a certain kind of power wearing woman's fashion. Same as today. I know all those uptight conservatives are just jealous because I am brave enough to wear my wardrobe out of the house. I have been doing this for quite some time and sure it has caused conflict here and there, but part of it for me is also standing up for my people. I am not a fighter, but I never run away. So if they come at me, I'm giving them the man portion!

  7. I could never fathom the point of carrying a designer bag while the rest of the outfit screamed “dragged through a shrubbery”

  8. It IS more expensive to dress "en femme". Fortunately, I don't need breast forms (bra cup size of DD with no filler) or a wig as my hair extends below my shoulders.
HOWEVER, I have over 40 dresses, nail polish in different colors, cosmetics, and far more women's dress shoes than men's dress shoes of which I have only two pairs.
A lot of women in my church don't doll themselves up as they wear jeans and sneakers, and no makeup. When the weather permits, I alternate Sundays "en homme" wearing a men's coat and tie outfit and "en femme" with a dress, etc. Very few men wear a full coat and tie outfit. When the weather gets hot as far as I'm concerned, the coat and tie outfits are out of season and v-neck wraparound dresses are my go to attire.

  9. used to have a lot of luck on E-Bay (including a new bridal gown for $50!)-not so much post Covid. Ross Dress for Less still good.I've noted there that you can get bargains on maxi dresses that are too long for the average woman and impossible to alter. I miss Fashion Bug-------emily

  11. Yes, being a woman, even part time is not cheap. As you say, the keys to feeling and looking good, breast forms and wigs are inevitably expensive, but, if cared for properly, last some time.

My clothes come from all sorts of sources. Underwear, especially that for shaping from a UK chain store (M&S) but quite a number of my bras are gifts from friends. I've shopped for dresses on-line, but my experiences of clothes from China, even if the vendor is European, is, at best patchy. As with bras, I've some generous friends who have given me tops and skirts and a few dresses so I've no lack of clothes; Cosmetics? I treat myself, every so often ,to a MAC makeover that replenishes the essentials and then the occasional lipstick, powder etc, to complete the look.
    I also, three or four times a year, go to a local beauty salon, where I'm treated always like a lady, for epilations, pedicures and the rare, but lovely facial;

  12. "Do you spend a lot?" When does spending of femme clothing become an compulsive disorder? If at all? If you're in a very deep "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" marriage, where a wife knows you're buying clothes, but does not want to engage in any conversation, what happens? On other sites some cis women complain about the "secrecy" of her husband. If you do not want to engage in conversation, what's the guy suppose to do? A wife is not reining in her husband with a gentle reminder that maybe 150+ dresses is way too many. Or how many scores of panties do you actually need? The point I am making is there are few outlets for self, if you're trapped in the closet. This site and a few others offer a daily outlet into the real world. I am not alone. The stresses of life may drive men to engage in shopping therapy. Yes, I have acquired way too much "stuff" but my expenditures in no way have even made a small dent in the family budget. Is there are difference between spending too much on pretty dresses and undergarments or tricking out a big ass pickup truck?

  13. Hi JJ,
I’ve done a mix of them all. Stores, eBay, online shopping. Sometimes I’ll shop a store but go home and see if I can find it online if it seemed too expensive.
I’m out quite a bit now so in some ways I’ve not minded spending more for something like a nice bag or sweater if I know it will get a lot of use.
One thing I’ve learned is to buy nice staple pieces like a classic skirt or bag, but get less expensive trendy pieces.

  14. J.J.
I shop in stores and on-line and mostly new. High price paid so far was for heels at over $325 each. Just bought a pair of high heel wedge sandals for about $180.
I figure I spend about $120/month mani/pedi with acrylics and $40 - $120/month for waxing. And about $50/month for other things, like jewelry.
I have a walk in closet with almost everything a girl could want.
