So said Jerry in “The Red Dot” episode of Seinfeld.
On Seinfeld, Jerry did not play a trans character. In real life, I am not aware that Jerry is a trans person.
Larry David wrote “The Red Dot” episode and as far as I know, Larry is not a trans person either.
My point is that the “too close to trying on a dress” line came from a non-trans person. Admittedly, it was intended to be humorous, but I wonder if there is a grain of truth buried in that line.
Do non-trans men feel uncomfortable in women's department because they feel like they are a little too close to trying on a dress?
I don’t know because I am trans. Whenever I am in the women’s department, I always feel close to trying on a dress. In fact, I would love to try on a dress if I see one I like and I have actually done so on more than one occasion in boy mode.
But do non-trans men have thoughts about wearing dresses?
I am sure that the average guy would not admit it except in jest because he would not want to muddle up his masculine image. But it does make me wonder how close the average guy is to joining our team.

Maybe not a dress , but a skirt , long sleeve blouse and a cardigan , along with flats with a wisp of a heel .

ReplyDeleteI do not like to assign a label to a complex thought or issue. I do not feel as a man that I am trapped in the wrong body. I am comfortable being a man and presenting as a man. Yet, I am draw to emulating a woman. I only wear dresses. Maybe, that is because when growing up in the 1950's and 1960's that was the dress code for females; in everyday life and on television. My battle of against non-acceptance precluded me from trying on a dress in a store. I did buy dresses to wear at home, and, sometimes they ended up in a donation pile. Being six foot tall I learned to avoid dresses with a defined waist line and go for sheaths and empire waist dresses. As long as there is an adequate description of the dress in the on-line catalogue, that's where I buy. I do not own a single pair of female pants. I see that as some attire that is too aligned with men's wear. It's dresses for me.
ReplyDeleteIF you take away the fear of being labeled whatever, many truly curious males would want to try a dress just to see what it is like. When I first tried on female ware, I was curious not looking to become what I later realize who I was. Was I driven by an underlying unknown fact of who I am? I don't know but for most that is the fear that keeps them from trying on a dress.
