Learning to Wait in a Skirt

During the Summer of Love, I was sixteen and endlessly raiding my mother’s and sister’s wardrobes whenever I had the house to myself. Always alert to the possibility that someone might walk through the door at any moment, I worked quickly: dress, makeup, a few stolen poses in the mirror—then everything undone just as fast.

I was as confused as a teenager could be, but I knew one thing for certain: I liked dressing up. I liked making up. I liked becoming a young woman, even if only for a few fleeting minutes. I treasured that secret girl-time alone, though I had no idea where it might eventually lead.

Then one day, I thought I’d found an answer.

It was in the August 11, 1967, issue of Life magazine. Buried in the news section was a short article titled “Now the Mini Has a Man in It.” According to the piece, “In a ‘spontaneous’ fashion happening, miniskirts for men have begun showing up in Paris, Munich, London, and Tokyo.” Accompanying the article were photographs of miniskirted men in Europe and Japan (see image above).

I was stunned and thrilled. Naively, I assumed the fad would spread. Surely it wouldn’t be long before boys in the United States would be wearing miniskirts too. And when that happened, I could finally step outside in the skirts and dresses I loved, in plain sight.

It didn’t happen.

I waited patiently, but the fad never caught on. Still, in time, I did go public wearing the skirts and dresses I loved, just the same.

C’est la vie.

  1. I remember the picture on the right with the smiling guy in the miniskirt. I too had dreams of it becoming acceptable. I kept the issue that contained it under my bed and would grab a peek whenever I could.

  2. Today’s Enfemme Funny has a true ring to it. More Mothers are encouraging their sons to experiment nowadays. Hopefully this will lead to more finding their true femme inner self & we will witness more scenes like this. in turn other women will get to admire transformations in public ( & private).

  4. absolutely right ! if i’m going to wear a skirt then its the full transition. no ‘half measures’. Femmed-up. hair. makeup. underwear. heels. a true woman. its only natural. i encourage others to try exploring their feminine side - it is a wonderful experience.

  5. Amen, to that! For me,it is dresses only! Not one pair of slacks, pants or trousers in my femme wardrobe. When I see a woman wearing pants and a shirt, all I see is a woman cross dressing.

    1. I see on Crossdressers.com where genetic men claim they have to get therapy to be comfortable wearing feminine clothing. When was the last time you saw women having to get therapy to wear masculine clothing (i.e., a plaid shirt, jeans, and hiking boots)?
If I am presenting "en femme" (which is most of the time) I NEVER wear trousers. If I wear trousers it's part of a man's coat and tie outfit.
And no, I NEVER felt the necessity to get any king of counseling or therapy to present like a woman.

  6. At the latest CDing event in Maasachsetts last weekend, it is general knowledge that men under 30 aren't participating because they are able to present as they like in public. I'm always looking, and every month I see a man in a dress shopping either in a supermarket or a drug store. My sons, who are in their 20s (1 in CT and 1 in MA) confirm this.

    1. oh yes - more wife's are discovering the excitement of ravishing their feminized husband - either by catching him crossdressing or actually encouraging him to transform. Although it's still common to find that crossdressing can end a marriage it is also leading toward couples discovering a new relationship. With women becoming far more open to crossdressing this will become a norm in the future I belive
