Lo and Behold X 2

The Risks of Online Shopping

I ordered a sweater dress online from Amazon. The online size chart indicated that I should order Large, so that’s what I ordered.

Dress arrived and when I tried it on, it was too big. I checked the tag attached to the dress and lo and behold, there were two tags: one read L for Large and one read XL for Xtra Large, whereas the label attached to the dress’s shipping bag read L for Large.

I really liked the dress, so I reordered it in size M for Medium. Upon its arrival, I tried it on and it was big, too. (The tag and shipping label read M for Medium.)

I had not returned the Large dress yet, so I decided to compare the L with the M. I laid one on top of the other on my bed and lo and behold, they were both exactly the same size! What the hell!

Do I dare order a Small? I think not and I will return the dresses for a refund.

  1. Oh, the joys of ordering clothes online! I had a similar issue with a gray sweaterdress I saw online last winter that was very similar in style and length as the green one in your post. I ordered my size but the dress that arrived fit well but was so short that it barely covered my derriere! I enjoyed it with tights around the house, but it made its way to the giveaway pile during spring cleaning.

    1. I SO like the growing number of vendors who tell you how tall the model is. If you are, say, 5'11", and they tell you the model is 5'9", you have a good idea where it will be for you. If she is 5'4", and it is borderline on her (for your standard), you know it will be too short

  2. Made in China clothing sizing ranges from problematic to awful. There is little to no QA/QC with the internet vendor(s). The known brands and/or big fashion stores pay for that for products they retail.

    1. I ordered a white dress from Amazon in my usual nominal size. After looking at the sizing chart, I canceled the order, and ordered the next larger size. I stupidly didn't try on the dress until the return period expired. When I got around to trying it on, it turned out to be too tight in the bust (my bra cup size is DD). And yes, that dress was "made in China". So I can vouch sizing of Chinese clothing can be problematic.

    2. Don't get breast reduction surgery John, just to fit Chinese sizing.

    3. Perish the thought of breast reduction surgery! Maybe if I lose 25 or 30 pounds, that dress might fit me. Otherwise, I'll donate the dress.

  3. Sizing on women's clothing is such a mess. You never know how it will really fit until you try it. It's not just Amazon - it happens with all suppliers. JJ

    1. Internet shopping is an adventure! It can be frustrating if you really love a dress or skirt but can’t get a size that fits. I am tall over 6 feet with 48DD. Dresses and tops are a challenge. I have a lot of skirts and tops so it makes matching my height and bust a lot easier. But I love a challenge especially if I am successful. I also love shopping in stores. My favorite is Boscov’s. They carry the same dress in several size ranges. So if a dress is too small or big you can usually find the same dress in a bigger or smaller size. Our T ladies group has done shopping events there which resulted in ladies with smiles while wearing their new dresses

    1. Indeed - if he can wear that dress so well with pearls he shouldn't be confined to the kitchen. Take him out. Enjoy his company. Show him off to others. Make a night of it. to show his gratitude for that new dress he can always return to his kitchen duties tomorrow after looking after you today 😉
