Day or Night

In the past, I usually went out en femme at night. Not so much now. These days, I usually go out during the day. Age is the main reason.

In my eighth decade on the planet, my eyesight is still correctable to 20/20, but driving in the dark is not a joy ride. Being blinded by on-coming vehicle headlights is no fun.

So I prefer daylight outings. It is not only safer driving in daylight, but it is also safer on a civilian encounter level. The chance of being accosted is less likely in daylight – at least it feels safer to me. (I still get chills thinking about the night I exited a gay bar in Hartford and was followed by a guy who wanted to get better acquainted.)

In addition to that too close encounter, I disliked going to gay bars for a couple of other reasons. Smoking in bars and restaurants was still legal back then and after leaving the bar, my clothes and wig stunk from the cigarette smoke. Also, I felt out of place in the gay bar. Gays were not interested in socializing with me no matter how fabulous I looked!

And so it goes.

  1. First, I also have been focusing on Daylight Outings more, but for me I think it's just that my confidence level in my presentation has been growing. That, and 2 friends who were very supportive and PUSHY (in a nice, sisterly way, of course!) challanging me to live as I want and not be afraid.
Second, I enjoyed Tom's lip sync, but I LOVED Zendaya's reactions!

  3. Hi Stana,
I agree with you about places to go in the evening. I have no problem going out in the daylight for the reasons you stated and my evening excursions are to places like the Bushnell or a community playhouse. The several times I have been accosted have been during the day in the New York Subway and an evening going to my hotel room in the Boston area. I was stupid on the latter instance. There was a guy by himself in the elevator and I got on without thinking. Next time, if there is one, I will let the elevator go and catch another.

  4. I prefer to go out minimally day or night as Valery. The atmosphere has darkened somewhat for people like us with the current anti-trans attitudes visible out there. I don't have a network to go out with at all and going solo as a wman at night is not a good idea even for women, much less us!

  5. 1-gay bars thumbs down
    2-correct-gays not interested in us
3-after dark-go to an upscale place - keep repeating-you will start to meet a lot of nice people-especially the women.
4-bonus: upscale = chance to dress up
