Stuff 81: The Search for Style

By J.J. Atwell

Do you have a “style”?

What do you usually wear when out? Do you want to look like a professional woman? A housewife? A party girl?

So many variations

I just brushed the surface with those categories. There is a wide variation within each of those categories. A professional woman could be dressed very prim and proper with a skirt suit. Or perhaps a dress. Maybe even slacks and a nice top. What about a less fancy office though? Maybe just jeans and a sweater? It may not be as interesting, but it’s a style.

How about a housewife style? Today’s housewife is probably just leggings and a t-shirt. Or maybe just a mumu. Is that something that would interest a CD? Only marginally for me. If I were a housewife I’d probably just be in jeans or capri’s with a flowery top, minimal makeup, comfortable shoes, maybe sandals or slippers. Again, it’s a style.

Maybe you’re more into a single woman Saturday evening style? Or a Sunday morning go to church style? Do we even know what those styles look like today? I know when I’m out, no matter what mode I’m in, I see huge variations in those styles.

How did you settle on your style?

That brings me to what I actually started to write about for this installment. How did you decide on the right style for you?

Teenage girls seem to go through a stage where they try different looks. They do their hair differently. Perhaps color it oddly. They work on different makeup effects. They experiment with different styles of clothing and shoes. Sometimes it’s a mashup of styles. Searching for a look that is unique to them but still fits in with their peers.

As a CD, did you go through the teenage girl stage? Or maybe you’re still doing it? Are you trying different hair styles and colors? I know I haven’t yet settled on the right one yet. So I’m still working on that.

When you dress, do you have a role model? Perhaps it’s your SO? Or a particular woman that you see every day at the office or in a shop? Maybe you want to model your look like a certain celebrity that you saw in a fashion magazines.

Style is not static

Even once you find your style it can still change. Especially as we age. Just like women will modify their style as they get older, your style will likely change over time. It helps us stay current and blend in with the general population. Plus it gives us new experiences.

I’ll be back

In the course of searching for my style, I’m sure I’ll find more stuff. Comments are welcome either here on the blog or by email to Jenn6nov at-sign gmail dot com. JJ is always looking for more stuff, so let me know what you would like to read about.

    Hi JJ!
I’ve always loved the variety of styles that we can utilize when we step out as women vs. the bland world of male fashion.
For me, work style is very much mix and match tops and skirts, and some trousers as I just do not note many women my age with matching suits unless they are high level executives or lawyers.
Weekend Norah looks very much a soccer mom with jeans or a casual dress. That said, being in New England, I can sometimes dress up a bit more on weekends and fit in as a tourist, lol.
I’ve long felt style is not just the clothes we wear, but a culmination of our whole presentation, and tells a story, and that story must fit the time and place. E.g. you would stand out in a skirt suit at the grocery market on a Saturday afternoon, but many women shop after work on a weekday.
The story can sometimes be subtle, but women know how to read these stories. Even with GGs, one can wear yoga wear, but because of the whole presentation, other women know she is just casual today. Another woman in yoga wear may be perceived as having given up on life. Style for sure, but our whole presentation and how we interact with the world all are pieces of our story.

    2. Hi Norah, your first paragraph says it all for me! The difference between men's and women's fashion always reminds me of a quote from RuPaul: "don't be afraid to use all the colors in the crayon box." Men are basically restricted to using the Crayola basic 8 pack, while women are free to use the huge Crayola 128 colors pack, along with some glitterpens thrown in for a little extra sparkle.

    3. Humans sure have things backwards as far as presentation is concerned. In the bird world the male is frequently more colorful than the female, e.g., mallards, cardinals, and peacocks. I for one am glad I left the dull, dreary world od men's "fashions" and moved onto colorful dresses and nail polish. For formal occasions I add makeup, heels, and earrings.

With reference to the size of the box of crayons I will say a man does not have to go for the smallest box of colors. I worked in a professional office for thirty+ years. I wore a business suit with a white shirt when I interviewed for the job. After that, the white shirt was never worn again and had to be tossed when I retired because it had turned yellow. At the office I wore the traditional male slacks in black, navy, brown or gray, but the shirts....Oh My! Depending on the season, spring to winter, the shirts were all colors: pastels to dark hues. All were canvases for my array of expressive ties. None of those solid reds that politicians to a man wear for group photos. It was patterns and designs, sometimes ranging to cartoon characters. Yes, I do have dresses that can fall into the "Little Black" dress category but primarily it is patterns and colors. Now, in my male retirement mode, it is usually graphic tee shirts to reflex how I may feel on a given day. Funny thing, just like the comment concerning male plumage on birds, it seemed I always got compliments from female I encounter.

I prefer the Weather Girl style. Mid-length flowy knit spandex mix dresses in bright colors with heels (of course) and a short or mid-length bob hair cut. Works for me. Love it. Randi

  3. If I had to describe my style in 1 word, I would say preppy. Designers like Ann Taylor or Ralph Lauren (not that my bank account allows me to fill my wardrobe with their designs haha). I also enjoy incorporating traditional menswear pieces or patterns with some ultra-femme clothes. So many choices available!!

Sounds like a fun look Elise! Suggestion for affordability - try the local thrift stores like Goodwill. Some amazing bargains can be found there. -JJ

  4. Still trying to figure out my style. I tend to lean towards elegant/sophisticated and age-appropriate clothing.

Age-appropriate? Your actual age? or your girl age? Just kidding! JJ
